Who we are
The Hope of the Valley Schools (HotVS) NPC is a non-profit organisation working towards fundraising for and building a three-stream collaboration high school in Ocean View in the Southern Peninsula of the Western Cape. Our vision is to establish a zero-dropout high school that will serve the needs of the Ocean View and Masiphumelele communities and will yield a high-quality education, enabling learners to be entrepreneurs or gainfully employed.
We have secured a fully zoned site from the WCED on the mountainside of the Kleinberg Mountain which will be developed to accommodate a safe, friendly and accessible campus for 1200 young people from the surrounding communities.
Our vision for this school is one where community involvement through donations (monetary and in-kind) contribute to building a no-fees school that will allow our learners to become productive and caring members of society.

Our Story
Early in 2022, our team began meeting with the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) to discuss the possibility of establishing another school on the southern peninsula to serve the communities of Ocean View and Masiphumele. We found that the education community in the area is very aware of the lack of space in the existing high schools, but the conversation did not extend to schools of skills.
Once we engaged with the social workers at Valley Development Projects and Open Door, the need for a school of skills and a high school became evident. The number of learners leaving primary schools in the area far outweighs the number of available high school seats. In our conversations with the WCED, it also became clear that they did not have the resources to build this much-needed high school in time.
We realised that the need in our community extends beyond an academic high school and that the change required for our young people to succeed would require a more holistic approach. At this point, we encountered the three-stream model piloted by the WCED and were encouraged to visit the Jakes Gerwel Technical School, which stands as the best example of a three-stream model high school in South Africa.
Building on the collaboration between Jupiter Street Primary and Education Ally, we received permission and support to use the education-zoned land behind the primary school, and Hope of the Valley Schools NPC was founded. We received immense and immediate support from the Bonnievale 418 team and the WCED. We connected with the right people at the right time and took on the task of initiating change in our community. We established the non-profit company in September 2022 and opened a bank account in faith.
Throughout 2023, we continued laying the groundwork and establishing the roadmap for success. During our journey, we met German philanthropists Thomas Steinbicker and Cornelia von Wulfing, who shared our dreams. They have since come on board as our core funders for Phase 1 of our building costs. Our first financial contribution was from Thomas’s mother when he brought her to the site during her holiday in South Africa. This tangible first financial step has led to promising conversations with WESGRO and the Maya Angelou Charter School for further financial and operational support. We look forward to contributions from more businesses as our project gains traction. We have also contracted the services of Dutch fundraiser Henk van de Geest and hired Archilab and CS Studio Architects to design the school buildings and plan the construction process.
We hosted our first stakeholder meeting on 5 July in the Ocean View High School hall. With all paperwork in place, we plan to break ground on the first phase of construction in 2025, which will include four classrooms, an admin office, and bathrooms.
